Puzzle Question (For the week of July 6 - July 13)

(Submitted by Andrew #539)

Based on the following clues, identify five well-known scientists and/or inventors. Take the first letter of each of their (last) names: using all of those letters once and only once, plus any other letters as desired, arrange them in any order to spell out the (last) name of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence:

  1. This American scientist co-discovered nine new elements for which he was awarded a Nobel Prize.
  2. This French scientist built a huge pendulum with which he demonstrated the rotation of the Earth.
  3. Among other achievements, this naturalized American scientist explained the photoelectric effect and Brownian motion.
  4. Two famous scientists independently developed the calculus in the 1680s: one was German scientist Leibnitz and this English scientist was the other.
  5. Work by this American inventor made possible the synchronization of sound and picture in movies.

Regular version (for everyone except APS): You need only give the name of the appropriate signer of the Declaration of Independence (need not mention the names of the scientists and/or inventors described in the above clues).

Special version for APS: Give the names of the five scientists and/or inventors identified by the clues. And, using the first letters of their (last) names once and only once, plus any other letters, spell out the (last) name of a little-known American inventor who is responsible for inventing voice-radio."
