A Capital Idea!

Suppose that you were living in a city like Bainbridge, GA (located about 200 miles south of Atlanta).

You would be much closer to Tallahassee (the capital of Florida) than you would be to your own state capital (Atlanta). In fact, you would even be closer to Alabama's state capital (Montgomery) than you would be to your own state capital. Yet, you would still be classified as being a resident of the state of Georgia.

I should think that a more logical approach to the partitioning of the US (or any country) into separate states would be to implement a proximity method:

The closest capital city to any given location would govern that location.

If this proximity method were to be adopted in the US, this is what a map* of the new states would look like:
