How to Change a File's Extension

Suppose that you have a text file (for example), and suppose that you would like to change its "type" (i.e., its extension) from ".txt" to something else (like ".src" for example). All you have to do is simply rename the file and give it the new extension . . .   UNLESS you have your folder options set to "Hide extensions for known file types". (Ugh!)  If so, you will have to remove that restriction. Fortunately, it's a pretty easy thing to do:

  1. Open any folder that you have handy.
  2. On the menu bar: Click "Tools", and then "Folder Options..."
  3. Select the "View" tab, and make sure that the "Hide extensions for known file types" box is not checked!

  4. Click the "OK" button.

You should now be able to change any file's extension without problems.
